Hello All,

My Name is Madelin. I am the new president of photo club. I am in my 4th quarter at AI and am a Photography major. I will share more about myself at the meetings during week 4.

We will be starting to have meetings again during week 4. We will be hosting two meetings a week, because we would really like to have photo club be more like a family than somewhere you go for an hour every other week. I feel it is really important as photographers to build a strong community amongst ourselves. We will have a meeting on Monday evening in Pence 225 from 5pm until 6pm and we will also have a meeting on Wednesday in LaSalle 319 from 1pm until 2pm. We will be continuing this schedule throughout the rest of the quarter, unless otherwise noted.

Election time is here as well and we need people for the following positions: Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. To hold one of these officer positions it is preferable that you are able to make it to both meetings, and are in at least your 4th quarter at AI. If you do not meet these requirements but are still interested in a position please talk to me either before or after one of the meetings or send me an email. If you would like to run for an officer position,I will need a statement from you as to why you think you would be great for the position no later than 5pm on Monday May 3rd.

Photo Club is Back!

Hey Club-

Quite a few things to put down here, so I'll do my best to be brief.

First:

As you may know or not, the Midwest SPE Regional conference is being held in Minneapolis this year, and we're very excited to see you there. There will be speakers, portfolio reviews, folks from all over the midwest, various venders, and more. You can still register for the conference here; just download the PDF, fill it out, and mail it out. Make sure your membership is up to date, as well. Portfolio reviews are on a first-come, first-serve basis based on registration, so the sooner you get registered, the better.

I also know that Colleen can use all the volunteering she can get, so go see her in room 342 if you're interested.

Next:

In regards to the 4x5 polaroids, just keep shooting. If you need more film, don't hesitate to talk to either myself or Lisa Hylle for another box. We may have a space for our show at the Northrup King building, but we'll need to hash out details further.

Finally:

Holiday shoot: are we still interested in doing this? We'll need committed people to sign up if this is going to go off. There are a couple other fundraisers in the works as well, which I and the other officers will go over at the next meeting.

Okay: meetings, I think, are going to be Mondays again from 5:00-6:00pm. The plan is to get posters up this week and for a meeting next week.

One more thing: this Thursday is the Student Org Fair, so stop by the table and say hi, and we can answer any questions you might have.

Meeting (sort of) - February 9 2008

Hey Photo Club-

We had a meeting scheduled for February 9, Monday. Jorah and I were the only ones present, so obviously not a lot was hashed out.

In an effort to get some inspiration going for the possible show this summer, the featured photographer this week is J Michael Wiltbank. Last December he had a show at BYU campus, and a portion of it was removed before the rest of the show. You can find the whole story here, where he details why the photographs were removed. The photographs were of a diptych nature; two portraits side by side. One of the people portrayed in each diptych identified themselves as a homosexual, the other was an ally. There were no labels, for specific reasons designated by Wiltbank. To see the images without the "Censored" stamp over them, go to his site, under the "People" tab. His website is here:

As you are aware, the possible show for us is taking place this summer, and is centered around Pride Weekend. Rob Anderson, coordinator of housing, has reserved space in the Main Gallery on the 1st floor for a show titled "From Or Through the Queer Perspective". Since there is no GLBT-specific group on campus, he is looking to one of the Student Organizations to spearhead the project. This is a great opportunity for your work to hang in a gallery. Please e-mail the club (aiphotoclub@gmail.com) if you are interested. We need commitment before I can contact Rob, so please let the Club know ASAP.

Our featured website this week is Veer, a great place for photographers and designers. Veer offers stock images, as well as illustrations and fonts that you can purchase. If you register for the site, you can also set up a profile to help with networking. If nothing else, it is a great place for inspiration. Plus their merchandise is great for all of you art/design geeks (myself included).

The other thing I must re-iterate is that Photo Club is in desperate need for funds. Our bank account is pretty dismal as of now. A fundraiser we were thinking about is one called "Shoot Your Mother". It will be a professional portrait shoot done by us, the Photo Club, and will take place a weekend or two before Mother's Day. The Minnesota Center for Photography used to do it, but as they are no more, it could be a great money-maker for us, as well as providing valuable experience for us as photographers. Please e-mail the Club if you are interested in volunteering. We can't host this event without participation, and a lot of prep work is required. Please e-mail the club if you are interested!

Meeting Notes: January 26

Hi People-

Sorry these notes are up so late. Getting back into the swing of things is difficult for everyone, I guess. The meeting on Monday was promising - we saw a lot of new faces thanks to Anthony Marchetti's Principles Class showing up. Thanks guys, and we hope you continue your involvement!

The big news is beginning next Monday, the 2nd of February. Mike Mergen, a freelance photographer out of Philadelphia, PA, is having a show in our Main Gallery at Ai. He's agreed to do a talk for us at 3:30 pm in the Main Gallery on Monday. A few of the teachers who teach that afternoon have agreed to bring their classes. I would like to encourage you, if you can, to show up and support the Club's efforts. We need you, the members, to make our endeavors worthwhile. If you can't make the talk for whatever reason, that's fine. Mike has also agreed to do informal portfolio reviews that evening in Room 318 at 5:00 pm. We will NOT be meeting formally this week as a result.

Moving on, we discussed possible fundraising efforts for this quarter. Bake sales have worked well for us in the past, and that it is an exceedingly easy thing to organize and carry out. Another idea that was brought up to us was something that the Minnesota Center for Photography used to do before they disbanded. It was a fundraiser that occurred just before Mother's Day that was a portrait sale known as "Shoot Your Mother". It would require a lot of work to pull it off, but it would also be a lot of fun and a great way to not only make money, but to practice some of the skills we're learning in our classes. If you're interested, please let us know - this would be a one-to-two day ordeal about a week or two before Mother's Day. We can only do this if we have enough participation from within the Club.

Finally, Rob Anderson, coordinator of Student Housing, has the Main Gallery space reserved during Pride Week. The potential show is to be installed on June 26th, and closes July 9th. I say "potential" because it sounds like Rob does not have any solid plans for the show. He has a theme, however, which is "From or Through the Queer Perspective". Basically, since Ai does not have a student organization specifically for GLBT-identified students, Rob was hoping an existing organization would step up to the plate for this show. Now it is very possible we could end up driving this boat home, and take full responsibility behind this. Photo Club is a good candidate, however, because we have experience with this (remember the show last quarter?). It is a great opportunity to work around a common theme, and will look great on our resumes. Once again, if you're interested, please feel free to e-mail the club (aiphotoclub@gmail.com) and let us know. If I can get enough interest from members, we can spearhead this and extend it to the rest of the student body.

Welcome Back. Winter Quarter; 2009

Happy New Year people!-

And welcome back! Winter quarter is just underway, and Photo Club will follow suit as soon as we can. We have quite a few things going on this quarter, but of course none of it will come to pass if we can't get the involvement needed. So...

First thing's first: Meetings! Meetings will be held MONDAYS this quarter, at 5:00 pm. We will be increasing the frequency of meetings as well, instead of every other week, they will be WEEKLY. That means EVERY MONDAY this quarter we will meet. Meeting place is yet to be determined, but be on the lookout for flyers posted THIS WEEK.

Also: If you can't make meetings, Photo Club is making great strides this quarter to go digital! Between the blog, a new Facebook group, a Twitter feed, members can now keep up with what's going on outside the classroom, as well as contribute remotely! The Facebook group has not been made yet, but the Twitter is up. Link to our account, set up a Twitter for yourself, and follow us here:

Show Next Week! (and a meeting... not so important)

Okay Photographers-

The Diplopia Show is next Thursday! If you're in the show, and haven't picked up postcards yet, I'm told Colleen has a bunch on her desk in the Academic Director's Office, on the third floor. I myself am undergoing a process I dub "geurilla advertising". If I see a message board somewhere, a postcard goes up.

If you would like to help hang the show, we will meet at the Northrup King building on Tuesday morning at 10:30 am. I don't know how long it will take to hang the show, but I will be there as long as it takes.

IMPORTANT: This means work MUST be in by Monday, December 1st! Printed and framed, please. Once again, black frames, white mats. No size restrictions or set number of diptychs. Please leave work outside Colleen Mullins' office in the Academic Director's office on the third floor.

Due to the surprising verbal turnout, we may have to nix the idea for a "personal" wall. This is not set in stone, however. It all depends on the number of submissions we receive. ALSO! If you have work in the show, we are asking that you contribute some foodstuff to the opening. Anything Hors-d'euvre-y is great. I am taking the responsibility for drinks, I plan on having two large coffee urns and a punch bowl at the ready. This is going to be a huge gallery night, so we'll get a lot of overflow traffic.

There is also a possibility that there will be a second gallery night Saturday, December 6th. This will not nearly as busy as the opening on Thursday, but I hear it will be free and some of the other galleries will have their doors open as well. This will be around 12-5 that afternoon, and we will need someone to be there if our doors are to be open. E-mail us and let us know if you are interested.

Tear-down for the show will be Sunday, Dec 7th. There is a show going up in Gallery 332 the following Tuesday, and they are hanging Monday the 8th. If you can help out, again, e-mail us and let us know.

Ashley Miller is planning on making business card title cards for us, so with your submissions, please include a piece of paper with your:

On to the meeting:

We had a quick meeting Tuesday this week. Mostly it was to finalize plans for the show, but we did have a question needing to be addressed regarding the holiday photo shoot fundraiser. For those of you who remember, Photo Club last year had a holiday photo shoot, in which clients would fill out order forms for Christmas cards and the like and we would photoraph them and/or their family. This unfortunately was not a huge success, but the question was brought up to Photo Club this year by Colleen.

We decided to decline for this year.

With all the work put into the show, and the timing (it would be an extremely late start) myself and several members decided to scrap that idea, with the intention of revisiting the option next year.

Hey dudes! Hoping your midterms are going well.

Photo Club had a meeting yesterday. Correction: Jorie, Ashley Miller and I had a meeting and Anthony Marchetti was nice enough to join us. =) No one's fault; midterm week was crazy, the majority of the officers were in Cleveland this weekend for SPE regional. Ads were not there, and we understand that. Anyway!...

Our show for Photo Club, "Diplopia", is set for December 4th! We have "the large space" in the Northrup King Building, as opposed to the "small space." So, this means:

1. Submissions, submissions, submissions! Get them to us, we want your work up on our walls!

2. No size limits! I've heard concerns expressed from students that they feel constrained by the 11x14 limit. We've abolished that. I (Evan) am planning on purchasing a roll of paper for my work, and if you want to get in on that, let me know.

3. Separate frames are totally cool! They can be the same image in one frame, or two separate frames. No restrictions here, either!

4. The only thing we want to regulate is the frames themselves. Any size, but we are looking for black frames, and white mats. The officers and I are going to IKEA for our own, and that means cheap stuff!

We would love your stuff about a week or so before the show so we can set up. Also, our refreshments are going as pot-luck-y, so if you submit work, please bring something snacky for our gallery browsers to munch on as they contemplate our AWESOME work.

I will post a PDF of our postcard design soon. Our description of our show is "Photographs that split the perception of a single concept into two distinct images."

Our featured website this week was Smashing Magazine, a great website that isn't necessarily focused on photography, but is very design-oriented and a good source of inspiration for artists such as ourselves. Our featured photographer was Anthony Goicolea, a photographer mentioned by Kelli Connell, a speaker at SPE that we saw, who references him in her own work.

Our next meeting will be Week 8, Tuesday evening at 5:00 pm. We will have adverts and e-mails this time, promise!

For our second annual road trip to SPE's regional midwest conference we trekked our way across the states to Cleveland, OH.

Fall '08 - 1st Meeting: 21 October 2008

Welcome back, students.

At the meeting on Tuesday we decided a name for our show at the Northrup King. In keeping with the theme of diptychs, the name of our show is "Diplopia."

Wikipanion gives this info on dipolopia: Diplopia, commonly known as double vision, is the simultaneous perception of two images of a single object.

The deadline to submit images for the show is 28 November. The show date is 4 December. Anyone in the program can contribute any number of diptychs for the show. The Photo Club will be printing postcards for the event and submitting press releases to the local monthlies and weeklies.

At the meeting we also saw work by Brian Ulrich. Ulrich gave a talk at Ai a few quarters ago, and will be speaking at the Midwest SPE Conference in November.

We also introduced two contests: BluDomain's contest for photographers photographing themselves with a peace sign, and the 29th Annual College Photography Contest, sponsored by the magazine Photographer's Forum.

The next meeting will be week six, same room (319 - the lighting studio) at 5 pm. I was talking about maybe implementing meetings every week, and alternating days for those of you who have class or work Tuesday evenings. Let me know what days/times will work best for these alternate meetings. I'd like to get more involvement than what we have now.

Hey all-

Elections held at meeting today. Evan Pape has been elected to President, Lisa Hylle has been elected as Vice President, Jorie Tappa is remaining as Co-President, and Ashley Miller is remaining as Treasurer.

We also brainstormed ideas for Titles for our upcoming show at the Northrop King, involving diptychs. The top three are "Double Vision", "Diplopia", and "One Coin, Two Sides".

We discussed the public art project in the Macy's/IDS skyway, "Speaking of Home"

There are a lot of people involved in this project, not just the curator. If you haven't seen it in person yet, take a walk through the skyway on your next lunch break to see it. It's up until Oct. 31st.

We also talked about artist 'tsevis' on flickr. His work combines hundreds of photographs to create a collage of a single image. Many of his works relate to current events and have been published in magazines.

There is an opportunity for Photo Club to have a group gallery showing. To make this a "group" showing we will have to chose a common theme that ties us all together. Bring your brainstorming ideas to our next meeting when we discuss this topic further.

If you have any ideas for Fundraisers for this quarter, email them to the club email! Some suggestions this quarter have been another bake sale, and possibly a home-built photo booth.

This meeting's featured photographer is Alex Wright. Check out his work, there's everything from commercial studio work to some polaroids.

This quarter we are finally going to have a group shoot! We are going to the Minnesota State Fair on Labor Day. There's no school this day so its a perfect day for us all to get together, capture the unique culture that is the Minnesota State Fair and have some fun while we're at it! Photo Club will pay for tickets and one roll of film for you to shoot with (if you're interested in shooting film). We need a head count ASAP, so if you're interested in attending send an email to aiphotoclub@gmail.com!

We presently have two officer positions available: Secretary and Vice President. The requirements to become either are to be active participants of photo club. To be Vice President, you must have attended at least 4 quarters at Ai. If you're interested in either of these positions, email the photo club.

We are also due for elections at the end of this quarter. Here's a break down of the responsibilities of each position:

President: Leads and oversees all meetings, also helps plan dates. Plans events, trips, group shoots, fundraisers, finds and suggests featured photographers, and websites.
Vice President: Leads meetings when President cannot attend a meeting, plans fundraisers, also finds and suggests featured photographers.
Secretary: Takes attendance at meetings, sends meeting emails, updates blog, and hangs meeting posters.
Treasurer: Responsible for all funds and assets of the club.

Keep these positions in mind, elections will be week 10 or 11. Each candidate nominates his or herself, and gives a brief speech to the group to tell us why they think they're the right ones for the position!

Our next meeting will be held Week 7, August 25th 5pm in room 339, hope to see you there!

Pearson Publishing is looking for photographs for a textbook--this would bean excellent resume line for the successful student(s). Please have anyinterested members (or others) email Colleen jpgs, no larger than 600 on their largest side. If he is interested, He will contact students directly for permissions. Traditionally in educational publications, there is no pay.
"We need photos that generate good writing prompts in the rhetorical modesof Narration, Description, Comparison/Contrast, Illustration, Cause-Effect,Argument, Classification, etc.
For starters, I guess I am most interested in good photos. I will let myauthor decide which are applicable to the modes. "

First place gets a $10 gift card for West Photo.

One Word Challenge is a photo club sponsored contest open to all photo club members. A word will be given at the beginning of the contest. The aim is to find a concept or literal way of visually describing the word. For example, I give you the word tension, you could take a picture of a person on a tightrope, or something more conceptual. To enter, bring an 8x10 print of your NEW photo (photo must be created FOR the competition, no old assignments) on the deadline meeting. All images will be critiqued, and voted on by all members based on composition, technical abilities, and concept/word relation.

GROUP GOAL: get a flickr account and we'll create a "member pages" link section so everyone can view everyone else's work.

Workshops: Jorie is hosting a Dreamweaver workshop week 4, room 339 2pm-3pm.

Bake Sale: We will be having a bake sale Tues-Wed Week 5 11-2. If you're interested at working at the counter or helping to bake, email photo club.

We talked about Steven Benson, our Guest Speaker for week 1.

The One Word Challenge competition was announced. Winners get a $10 gift card to West Photo.

We are looking into getting T-Shirts again, Jorie offered to make a design to be approved by the club. T-Shirts would be $15 each.

We are entering the Nature's Best Photography contest as a group. Start submitting hi-res (400ppi) files to the photo club folder on the Photo drive with your first and last name. All entries must be in by April 23 so the CD's and entry form can be postmarked on time.

Announcement:
This quarter we will me having meetings every other week, and we will try to fill in the other weeks with workshops and speakers for you!

We have only recieved one or two requests for speakers, and barely any requests for workshops. You responded YES to having more of them on your survey, but you need to make SUGGESTIONS for what you want!

Please make suggestions for ANYTHING, this includes speakers, workshops, fund raisers, student lead critiques, club contests, group shoots.... anything you can think of that relates to photography that you want to learn outside of school!

1. Project Competition:
The Project Competition is for photographers working on long-term documentary projects and fine-art series. Three jurors reach a consensus on the First Prize and three Finalists. Each juror also selects an additional project to receive a Juror's Choice award.

2. Singular Image:
The Singular Image recognizes outstanding individual photographs in color and black & white. Photographers are invited to submit their most compelling images.

3. Review Santa Fe:
Review Santa Fe is for photographers who have created a significant project or series and would like to meet with industry leaders. The event consists of portfolio reviews with renowned photography professionals, a night of portfolio sharing, and more.
